This program is available to skiers ages 9 to 18. When enrolling the athlete has the choice to join either a Sport (noncompetitive) team or the Comp Team. The Sport Team is for athletes that want to ski hard and hone their skills in order to ski at their highest level. This team is for all the athletes who like to ski for the pure fun and challenge inherent to our favorite sport and the winter environment. The Comp Team is composed of top-level skiers who want to train and compete at the regional and/or national level. They exhibit an aptitude towards Big Mountain skiing, top-level skiing skills, an understanding of the big mountain environment and the ability to assess and discuss ski lines, hazards, and other factors related to safely skiing down the mountain in challenging terrain. Athletes must be strong all-mountain skiers.
Athletes will have the opportunity to compete nationally in the IFSA Series, regionally in the Tahoe Jr. Freeride series, as well as the Big Mountain Squaw Cup events.

The Big Mountain Ski Team is not a novice ski team program. All team members, regardless of age, need to ski at a definite (defined) skill level. Skiers need to be able to link parallel turns on a long, steep groomed run (like Alpine Bowl). Skiers need to be able to handle off-piste runs like The Pacific Crest Bowls with reasonably good form and high level of control in variable snow conditions. Skiers also need to demonstrate a sense of terrain, snow conditions, and be able to communicate effectively with coaches and peers. Over time, they should be able to recognize and handle or avoid hazards inherent to the challenging terrain at Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley. When a participant demonstrates the skiing described above and the basic savvy to ski the whole mountain with poise and confidence, he/she is ready for the Big Mountain Team.
