Students can expect to develop a good foundation on how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field and to learn avalanche rescue techniques.

This is a comprehensive entry-level avalanche course designed for those with basic ski & snowboard touring experience. There are no other prerequisites. However, we strongly suggest taking an Intro to Backcountry course beforehand if it is your first time in the backcountry.  The price includes all necessary classroom supplies and the AIARE field book. These items are often not included in the course price, but we don't like any hidden costs.

Due to COVID-19, the indoor classroom session will be moved to online while the 2 day in-person field sessions will be conducted in small groups and socially distanced. With the help of AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education), we are designing an online classroom experience that includes both learn as you go digital material as well as online meetings with the instructor team. However, the two field days are where the rubber really meets the road, so to speak. Theories are tested, abstract topics become tangible, and our instructors are truly able to teach the art of avalanche hazard management, all while moving through the incredible terrain of the Lake Tahoe Backcountry.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the AIARE 1 course the student should be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for travel in avalanche terrain
  • Recognize avalanche terrain
  • Describe a basic framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain
  • Learn and apply effective companion rescue
  • Instructional sessions (24 hours including both class and field instruction)
