Expecting mostly sunny skies Saturday. Highs in the 30s. We have gusty northeast winds with gusts of 30-40 mph across the ridges that will turn north Saturday.
Sunday - Monday System:
An area of low pressure tracks down the CA coast Sunday into Monday. The latest model runs bring it close enough to spread light snow into the Sierra by Sunday afternoon and clearing out by Monday afternoon. Some models bring light snow in as early as 7 a.m. while others hold off until Sunday afternoon. The snow showers should taper off by Monday morning, with most of the showers shifting to the east side of Lake Tahoe.
By Monday morning we could see 2-5 inches of new snow on the mountain, and 1-3 inches at the base. Highs in the 30s for Sunday into Monday. Gusty winds with mountain top gusts to 40+ mph from the southwest Sunday, switching east for Monday.
If you are traveling home on Sunday afternoon/evening, plan for chain controls and possible delays on the highways.
Tuesday - Thursday:
Tuesday through Thursday high pressure builds in with highs in the 30s and lighter winds. At the base, we could warm to near 40 degrees. Expecting sunny skies and beautiful weather for New Year's Eve. New Year's Day a storm moving through to our north could bring some clouds. Then we should see some sun again Thursday. Winds could still be gusty up top, gusting to 30+ mph.
The pattern may begin to transition the weekend of the 3rd-5th. Some forecast models show the next two storms, Friday night & next Sunday, pushing as far south as Tahoe. Other models keep them to our north through next weekend with just some clouds and gusty winds for Tahoe.
It looks like we could transition to a more active pattern for the 2nd week of January. We could see below-average temperatures and cold weak-moderate systems dropping down from the north/northwest through the week.
