Freedom Fest Update: Fireworks Cancelled but the Party Goes On

Category: Operations Blog

Due to wildfire risk in the area, Freedom Fest fireworks planned for July 5th at Squaw Valley have been cancelled. While we are disappointed to cancel the fireworks display, the safety of our guests and the surrounding community remain our absolute top priority. A laser show has been added to the schedule to take place during the free DJ show from Paul Oakenfold at 8pm on the KT Deck, and the rest of the Freedom Fest bash will go off as planned!

Wildfire Danger Information

Even though we had a significant winter for snow, we have had a dry, hot and windy spring and the ground fuels have dried out and pose a significant hazard for fire in the fallout zone of the fireworks. Unlike the other great fireworks in the Tahoe area, Squaw Valley does not have a fallout zone over water.

Overall, this serves as a great reminder to all of our local residents and visitors over the July 4th holiday: a burn ban is currently in effect, including campfires and non-permitted fireworks. Please help us keep this incredible area safe and beautiful for the years to come.” - Allen Riley, Fire Chief, Squaw Valley Fire Department.

In addition to the Squaw Valley Fire Department's restrictions, The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for gusty winds and low humidity, and the forecast for warm days and dry winds indicates high fire potential.
