Year Two of the “Ride On” Employee Bike to Work Program Kicks Off at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] June 7, 2018 – The employee Ride On bike to work program is back in its second year at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. Employees rode 8,373 miles during their work commutes in 2017, effectively reducing the resort’s carbon footprint by 4.3 tons. The goal of the program is to encourage employees to be active, take advantage of good weather, save on vehicle expenses and reduce overall carbon footprint. By joining the resort’s free Strava club team, resort employees track their commuter mileage and become eligible to win prizes like a seven-speed cruiser bike. Employees who tag #squawalpinejobs in their Ride On related posts can win pop up prizes from Smith, Trek, Oakley, Patagonia, and more.
One of the 2017 Ride On winners, Chelsea Swain, said of the program: “It is a really encouraging program and a great way to get new people to start biking. I got to get my miles in and enjoyed seeing who else was riding from Squaw Alpine. It helps to create a community feel. It’s a great summer morale booster!” Chelsea is an operator on the Aerial Tram and she rode 730.9 miles in summer 2017.
As part of the participating employees’ commuter mileage tracking, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows will also enable a carbon offset tracking system so employees can see the direct impact their efforts have on reducing their overall carbon footprint.
The resort is also offering a bike maintenance center in Parallel Mountain Sports in the Village at Squaw Valley for employees in need of basic bike repairs, access to new commuter and e-assist bikes that are part of the resort’s 80+ bike rental fleet, and has made on-site shower facilities available to Ride On participants at the resort’s uniform office.
How Ride On works:

  • Employees participating in the Ride On program will download the free Strava app to their smartphone and join the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Strava club team
  • Each day, participants will log in to Strava to track their commuter miles
  • Prizes are awarded to the employees who accumulates the most commuter miles
  • For employees without a smartphone, the Squaw Alpine HR team will connect a bike computer to their bike to manually track and record miles traveled
