Over the weekend high pressure builds back in with sunny weather expected. Highs warm into the 40s over the weekend on the mountain, and to around 50 degrees at the base. Lighter winds expected. Overnight lows continue to dip into the 20s.
Cold & Snowy Week Ahead:
Monday we will see another shot of cold air into the Sierra. Highs on the mountain drop back into the 30s for Monday-Tuesday and 40s at the base. Winds pick up Tuesday with the approach of the next storm.
The next storm moves in Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. This is a cold storm with high snow ratios of up to 20:1 on the mountain that will bring powdery snow. The latest forecast models show enough precipitation to bring 18-24 inches of snow to the upper mountain by Wednesday, and 12-18 inches at the base.
An area of low pressure looks like it will form along the CA coast Wednesday and move south and then through southern CA Thursday. That should pull draw up moisture into the northern Sierra with scattered snow showers continuing Wednesday through Thursday night. We should start to clear out on Friday.
It remains cold with highs on the mountain continuing to be in the 20s with gusty winds. That also means high snowfall ratios continue as well. We could see 3-6 more inches of snow pile up slowly on the mountain Wednesday - Thursday night.
Still plenty of time for the forecast details to change. We will continue to fine-tune the details as we get closer. Be advised that the snow and wind will impact holiday travel, especially with the powdery snow that will easily blow around.
It looks like the storms could clear out next Friday into the weekend of the 30th. It could be a cold but nice weekend for skiing. Snowmaking should be able to continue around the clock.
The next storm could be sitting off the coast by Sunday the 1st. Some forecast models move it into CA by Monday the 2nd, while others stall it off the coast until later in the week. When/if it does moves into CA it could bring more snow to the Sierra. We will keep an eye on that as well as we get closer.
