Dear Broken Arrow Family:
They say that "when you know...you know." And today, we know.
It is with tremendous sadness in our hearts that we are announcing our decision to cancel the 2020 edition of the Broken Arrow Skyrace , Presented by Salomon. This is, of course, the only responsible course of action. Unfortunately, the unpredictable weather in the high Sierra during the fall months also means that postponing is not a viable option.
We waited longer than some events because, as a race management team, we are inherently optimistic people. We didn't want to give up hope. We were looking for that light at the end of the tunnel and, of course, we dearly wanted to watch you #RingDasBell in Squaw Valley.
But, as we continue to watch the COVID-19 virus spread, and after consulting with our own medical team and public health authorities, we now know that this is, not only, the right decision, but the morally imperative one. As a trail and ultrarunning community, we must play our part in combatting this pandemic.
Two weeks ago, we made you a promise that we would act in the best interest of our Broken Arrow community to ensure that our runners, volunteers, spectators, and staff remain safe. That was the guiding principle that drove our decision-making and you can be sure that this will ALWAYS be our top priority.
We know that races are expensive. Like other events (and consistent with the terms of entry), we are unable to offer refunds. However, we want to do as much as possible to ease the sting. Our cancellation plan is as follows:
We will issue a full credit (100%) to ALL entrants for the 2021 Broken Arrow Skyrace. Additionally, we will open registration a week early to offer you priority registration. That way, you don't have to worry about missing out on one of those coveted spots (especially in the 26K). We know it's not a perfect solution and it may not be all that you were hoping for, but we hope that you will see this as a fair and reasonable approach.
It’s important to note that, while the majority of our costs are incurred in the two months leading up to the race, we do have significant costs that we incur throughout the year and expenses that we have already paid to various vendors. We are able to offer full credit because our partners at Salomon Running have stepped up to help us cover most of those sunk costs. Please join us in thanking them for their ongoing support of the Broken Arrow Skyrace. This event could not happen without their generous support and they have been AMAZING partners.
We are profoundly grateful for and humbled by YOUR support as well over the past four years. From day one, we sought to prove that it was possible to put on a world-class, uber-competitive, highly branded event that still remains true to the culture, traditions, and values that make our sport so very special. We think we have raised the bar a little bit for what trail running events can look like here in the United States and that has been possible because of the community that we have built...TOGETHER. THANK YOU!!!
We are truly heartbroken that we won't see you this summer, but we look forward to celebrating again together as a community at the 2021 Broken Arrow Skyrace (June 18-20, 2021).
Until then, please continue to keep yourself (and others safe) by following the guidance from the Center for Disease and Control (CDC) and your state and local authorities. After all, we are a community and that means that we are all in this together.
Wishing you all the best and please reach out to us with any questions.
Brendan, Ethan, and Geoff
