Local Tips For The Chief

Giant playground

"Granite Chief is a giant playground full of diverse terrain. Chutes, trees and cliffs to huge open bowls with many different aspects so you can always find good snow. On a powder day, I head to Break it Out for long consistently steep runs. In the spring, Magoos holds some of the best corn on the mountain."
Josh Allen

A great hike

“A great hike and ski experience is 9,000 foot Granite Chief Peak. A ten to fifteen minute hike from the top of the lift and you are rewarded with outstanding views of the Sierra Crest and challenging expert descents. You can choose northeast facing chutes or a north ridge route to the ski area boundary and return to the lift.”
Curtis Crooks

A different world

“The Granite Chief zone is like an entire different world compared to the other zones at Squaw. The higher elevation guarantees dryer and deeper snow even during warm storms, and the bowls and chutes are wind protected during big storms collecting consistently deep perfect powder. There are so many little secret spots all around the Granite that it would take a lifetime to ski all of them, and it is away amazing to explore new pockets and lines traversing in both directions off the top of the chairlift.”
Travis Ganong, Olympic Skier
